leather

Leather is a durable and flexible material created by tanning animal rawhide and skin, often cattle hide. It can be produced at manufacturing scales ranging from cottage industry to heavy industry.
People use leather to make various goods and it is produced in a wide variety of types and styles, decorated by a wide range of techniques.

vanhoffontwerpen - leather
Thomas Eyck commissioned Dick van Hoff to design a series of products in leather. The collection consists of a chair, a daybed, a firewood bag and a brief case, bag and a lunch set. For this collection Dick van Hoff, founder of Vanhoffontwerpen, uses leather in a fresh and innovative way. He draws existing dogmas into question and offers new ways of going through our daily routine. As he calls it: “decelerate to accelerate”. The products invite you to refresh your mind: have a lie down on your daybed and on leaving the house take your bag and lunch box along to enjoy nature on the chair which sits you right down in the grass. The products have a striking relevance about them. The designs are archetypes that capture your heart, they are robust in shape with subtle detailing. ?The collection is produced in close collaboration with “De Buffel” leatherwork and “Kuperus & Gardenier” carpentry in the Netherlands.

With her project “fossils”  the young artist Alegría van der Zande (1988, breda) embarks on a journey to search for the small wonders in nature: wild flowers, plant, vegetables, twigs and seeds  from your everyday environment. During her graduation at the University of Arts Utrecht she developed a technique to press botanical elements in leather, creating all unique contemporary fossils. The final result is influenced by among others pressure force, pressure temperature, thickness of leather and humidity of the flora. Each item has its own recipy; all colors are real (not painted).

"Fossils" shows us the value of seeing the finest and delicate beauty of nature that daily surrounds us, but which we don’t always observe anymore. The combination of the raw leather and the aesthetic lines and subtle colours of the flora results in an astonishing contrast between the harsh leather and the graceful details of the flora. with the passing of the season the design change too, following the rhythm of nature.
